| CVIAQ travelled to Mackay on the 22nd September and partnered with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to deliver a technical seminar to the local commercial vehicle industry. The seminar attracted 25 attendees including representatives from Cummins South Pacific, Westco Truck Sales, The Brown & Hurley Group, Crokers Truck Centre and the Carlisle Group.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads’ Manager for Vehicle Standards, Mr Greg Swann, was in attendance and spoke to the group about current issues that the Department is involved with including movement of unregistered vehicles using a trade plate, re-rating the GCM on prime movers and the future partnership with CVIAQ on the review of VSB6 Code of Practice. Mr Swann also spoke about the national heavy vehicle regulator, timelines for its commencement and how the legislation of regulations nationally will be decided and passed.
CVIAQ Technical and Regulatory Officer, Mr John Samson, spoke on CVIAQ’s recent activities which included its preliminary work in responding to the Commonwealth Department of Transport on the National Heavy Vehicle Braking Strategy draft paper, negotiating with the Department of Transport and Main Roads on the extended use of dealer plates and its continual review of Australian Design Rules through its technical group, the manufacturers Council. Mr Samson also discussed environmental factors, improvements in technology and the significant growth of the road freight task as driving forces changing the industry.
