14/10/06  CVIAQ Annual Dinner and Awards Night a Great Success

The CVIAQ acknowledged excellence from within its membership at the Annual Dinner and Awards Night held on Saturday 14th October.

CVIAQ members, staff and invited guests gathered together at Hillstone St.Lucia to enjoy a great dinner, entertainment and to celebrate the achievements of some of the industry’s most talented members.

The entertainment, Elton & Friends, was enjoyed by all. Members and guests danced the night away to renditions of classic Elton John songs and a few other great memories from Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Rod Stewart thrown in for good measure.

The highlight of the evening was the announcement and presentation of the CVIAQ Apprentice of the Year Award. The 2006 award was won by Tom Higgins of Cummins Engine Company / TORGAS. Tom, an apprentice in Certificate 3 Heavy Commercial Vehicle Engineering - Mechanical, was presented with the Award, a laptop computer & printer and tools to the value of approximately $4000.

The Industry Recognition Award for 2006 was presented to Mr Tony O’Leary from Tramanco for his exceptional contribution to the industry. Mr O’Leary, a past CVIAQ Board Director, was a dedicated member of the CVIAQ Technical Committee (now the Manufacturers Council) for many years and was intimately involved in the formulation of the Queensland Code of Practice for Commercial Motor Vehicle Modifications.

A bonus for the evening was the presentation of a cheque from the CVIAQ President’s Charity Dinner Working Committee to Peter Johnston, CEO of the Leukaemia Foundation Qld. The cheque presentation was in recognition of the five years of collaboration between the CVIAQ and Leukaemia Foundation Qld which has raised funds in excess of half a million dollars through the annual CVIAQ President’s Charity Dinner.

The CVIAQ applaud the generosity of its members who donated the funds raised from the annual CVIAQ Golf Day to the purchasing of the prize package for the award recipients. Many thanks also to Warby Tools for their share in the sponsorship of this award and to Hillstone St.Lucia for their donation of a dinner for two at the Hundred Acre Bar as one of the Raffle Prizes.
